This ammonite measures 3.5 inches (9cm) at its widest point and is exposed on one side of the 8.5 x 5.5 inch wide shale matrix, the neutral grey colour providing a perfect ground to highlight the dramatic aesthetic contrast of the fossil. The shimmering iridescent colours are the result of light refracting through and rebounding from thin platelets of aragonite & conchiolin the primary constituents of the ammonite's shell formed through millions of years of compression and mineralisation.
