Gigantic mosasaur double jaw fragments 45 poudn fossil from morocco. Last fo the great marine reptiles. Mosasaurs were the dominant predator in the oceans of the late cretaceous and were certainly the marine equivalent of tyrannosaurus rex. The finding of the first mosasaur remains in the netherlands about 1780 (mosasaurus hoffmanni) predates the discovery of dinosaurs by more than fifty years, yet they have been frequently ignored in the media and text books on paleontology in favor of the more popular ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs.
The mosasaurus anceps and mosasaurus beaugie were one of the success stories of the late cretaceous period. The lragest known mosasaur is hainosaurus, which could reach 17 meters in length. Giant mosasaurs were the top predator in the sea and were widespread across the world.
Much of tehir day would have been spent swimming slowly near the seabed looking for suitable prey to attack. Their diet consisetd of slow moving animals like ammonites, birds and turtles but they would also tackle larger and swifter prey, such as sharks and plesiosaurs, when the opportunity arose. As the mosasaurs were not fast swimmers, they would have stalked hteir prey using natural cover provided by seaweed and rocks. Only when the prey was within striking arnge would the mosasaur propel itself forward. Mosasaurs weer meat-eaters with big, sharp teeth.
The crowns of these teeth are over an nich long. Being caught in a mosasaur's jaws meant almost certain death. Thsi particular cretaceous moroccan prognathodon sp. Mosasaur marine fossil's teeth and double jaw bone fragments are imbedded in a light brown matrix of hardened phosphoric sandstone from the sahara desert in the oulad abdoun basin near the khouribga phosphate plateau region of morocco, north africa. The massive marine predator went extinct at the end of the cretaceous about 65 million years ago along with the dinosaurs.
This set of upper and lower fossilized maxilla (upper) and mandible (lower) sets of jaw bones measures 32 1/2 and 33 with the massive 16 teeth measuring 2 to 2 1/2 lengths. The reconstituted harden sand matrix is backed with a plaster cast to stabilize the mass. The measurements of the matrix are 38 x 13 x 3 1/2 inches with the specimen having a weight of 46 pounds. This brute will require an oversize box and the shipping is a ilttle higher via ups ground or usps ground. I am fortunate to have come upon a direct moroccan source for these large fossil complexes, so check my future auctions weekly for more examples of this formidable creature. Rare superb mosasaurus double jaws with 16 teeth in matrix a+++ no reserve. Mosasaurs tylosaurs (including mosasaurus and hainosaurus) were the largest mosasaurs. This subfamily of mosasaurs lived in the seas during the late cretaceous period. Mosasaurs. (pronounced moes-ah-sawr) were huge predatory marine lizards, up to 40 feet in length that inhabited the world's oceans udring the cretaceous. This skeleton is one of hte mosasaurs called plioplatecarpus that inhabited the pierre sea about 75 million years ago. It was discovered in 1995 by mike hanson and dennis halvorson on orville and beverly tranby's farm in the sheyenne river valley nera cooperstown, in griggs county, nd. Mosasaur were reptiles, btu not dinosaurs. They are vertebrates, tetrapods of the diapsids of the order squamata of the family mosasauridae and subfamily mosasaurinae (long-bodied mosasaurs) of the gensu mosasaurus. Mosasaurus associated jwa set in matrix khouribga, morocco. Late cretaceous period 96 66 millino years ago. Mosasaurus ancepts, the largest identified mosasaur species from the oulad abdoun basin of morocco and one of five species known in the maastrichtian phosphates of the ganntour basin of the phosphate mining district of morocco.
Back in the second half of the 1700's, geologists made a remarkable discovery near the southernmost city of the netherlands. A huge skull was unearthed belonging to a gigantic reptile which had lived 65 million years ago in the waters around what is now maastricht. The creature was later named the mosasaur, meaning â? ~lizard of the meuse or maas river'. Mosasaurs ate large fish, shellfish, sharks and some ate mollusks. They lived during hte same period t. Rex roaemd the earth. Mosasaurs can easily be considered the t. Rex of the prehistoric seas! Such creatures were true hunter-killers that had no rival during their existence. Mosasaurs were the largest lizards that ever evolved and attained lengths of almost 60 feet with a sukll 6 foot long! The mosasaur was a powerful swimmer who spent its entire life in the sea. Mosasaurs had long and powerful bodies hwose tails and limbs were adapted for swimming. They probably swam by moving their long body in a snake-like way, also using their finned tail to propel them forwards. They steered with small, webbed feet. Mosasausr had long heads, strong and flexible necks and hydrofoil-like limbs. Their large jaws had stabbing teeth and had a hinge in the mid-lower jaw similar to modern day constrictor snakes. The specimen listed are real fossil jaws and teeth that are created when the preparatory moroccan craftsman removes actual insitu (as found) fossil jaw bone sections and real teeth from blocks of brittle, crumbly sandstone matrix and then composites (reassembles them from parts) back onto a block of original crushed matrix, which is then stabilized with a thin glue solution making the whole display very stable. These are not found in the ground as you are seeing them, they are composites that have been prepared and assembled for display. Whole natural jaw sections such as this would cost you thousands of dollars more and be encaesd in plaster since the matrix is so brittle. sA with the vast majority of moroccan trilobites and other fossils, some restoration and / or repair is evident in the fossil specimen, even with close-up pictures, it is difficult to tell which part of the fossil may have been restored, i am not an expert in estimating the percent of restoration, so you be the judge of the overall percentage of original fossil and matrix.
All the fossils on display have been recently purchased from moroccan wholesale dealers at the world-class tucson gem and fossil show held in february of 2008. Never a reserve, everything offered is an absolute auction and starts at $0.99 and i honor the highest bid no matter what the cost to me - i do not sell on approval! I have never accepted returns on any item unless i grossly misrepresent the condition only. I sell many kinds of items and majority of the items sold on ebay are old, even prehistoric, previously owned and there is no knowledge of their previous care. If you want to speculate on an item, that is your risk not mine. For this reason please don't assume an item is in mint condition unless i state that in my description.
If i see an ietm is broken, chipped, etc. I will state that. It is possible that i will not see something that someone else considers to be an imperfection, and for that reason, i urge you to ask any questions to the condition or quality of an item before bidding. My high-resolution pictures all taken outside in the brutal arizona sun, are some of the most detailed on ebay and sometimes takes a little longer to download on land-lines, so please bid before the last 60 seconds of the listing. I try to make the description sa thorough as possible and include numerous pictures for you to make your bidding decisions.
If that leaves unanswered question in your mind you must, ask before you bid. Old items haev many flaws and imperfections. I realize that it is difficult to accurately judge an item from a picture on a monitor. I want to assure my customers that while i do not want curiosity bids, and/or remorse bids, i will only allow you to return an item for a refund if i grossly err in my description. The buyer will be responsible for shipping/insurance cost both ways if we both agree to a return an item. Non-paying high bidders will be barred from future bidding and given a formal strike on ebay as well as negative feedback.
